Day 5: Orpheus

Interpretation notes and trivia under the cut!

Orfeu meu amor <333 Honestly this could be my longest ever set of notes or the shortest because unlike literally any of the other Apollonian figures in this, I have never once had to waver from what I wanted with Orpheus and that's an Orpheus without Eurydice. I know that sounds kind of strange, Orpheus and Eurydice have always been completely synonymous with each other but like, Orpheus is kind of completely batshit as a concept and I'm tired of pretending the most interesting thing about him is his love life?? His love life is cool, don't get me wrong, but we, collectively, as a group of people don't pay nearly enough attention to the fact that Orpheus was singer and musician so gifted that he made trees and rocks bow to him and he could stir even the gods to grieve from his songs. This is the guy who's song was so beautiful that not only did he outsing the Sirens, they also killed themselves upon hearing his song?? This is the man that was pulled apart but his head just?? Kept on singing??? So the Muses just???? Added his perpetually singing decapitated head to their choir??? There are depictions of Apollo using said decapitated head to help him teach people???? And we're gonna focus on him trying to get his dead wife back?????? Really?? Miss me with that nonsense, Orpheus is the witchest witch to ever witch and if no one else is gonna make him the disgustingly powerful bard he was in myth then I guess I'll have to do it myself. His femme appearance is mostly inspired by the highly ornamental raiment of kithara players and he consistently has some of the fanciest clothes of the cast apocalyptic hellscape be damned.

Some assorted trivia:

Son of Apollo and Calliope - was accidentally conceived during the period when Artemis had forbid Apollo from fraternising with mortal creatures in penance for him orchestrating Orion's death and so Calliope and the other Muses hid him away in the court of King Oeagrus. Didn't know Apollo was actually his father until quite a bit later.

Not a demigod as that would imply he's half human. Orpheus isn't exactly mortal either but he certainly cannot be harmed by most normal methods. There's no formal name for something half god, half muse and not deathless so Orpheus prefers to identify as the Son of a Muse rather identifying strongly as something strictly divine.

Older than Heracles! One of Apollo's oldest children still kicking about, actually, but he's treated like the youngest due to how fragile he'd been after Eurydice's death. Is generally better now than he used to be, but still tends to have depressive episodes every now and again.

Horrifyingly powerful. Orpheus' words are so potent that he does his best to not speak at all for fear of influencing the people around him accidentally. Has the uncanny ability to transmit his own feelings through his songs which can be both fantastic and awful. The Twelve had Apollo put a seal on his tongue when he was grieving so his song would stop completely disrupting the world. The seal's since been removed as Orpheus has had a lot of help working through his feelings. Now he paints whenever he thinks about Eurydice which is much more productive for everyone involved.

Argonaut, storied traveller, speaker of many languages, healer, teacher and storyteller. Teaches occasionally at the Parnassus Institute for Gifted Children and tends to be a favoured teacher whenever he drops by. Is responsible for a lot of very important people knowing some form signed or gestured language.

Has no set 'home' and wanders from temple to temple, sanctuary to sanctuary. His worldly belongings like his clothes and old paintings are currently with Asclepius and his family. Apollo has some of his stuff as well, but they're mostly special instruments like the holy lyre he used on his journey on the Argo.

Never keeps any money on him and is usually fed and clothed by the townspeople wherever he goes. Hasn't had to actually pay for something in decades. Has absolutely no concept of money because he'd forgotten it's a thing people need day to day.

Had a brief fling with Heracles while he was still mortal and the two remain on good terms even now. Heracles tends to visit him every now and again for a stint in some springs and good music.

Favourite colour is maple orange, favourite food is roasted pheasant with rosemary and thyme. Allergic to specifically pale yellow mead but is fine with raw honey and honeycomb. Aristaeus has been trying to figure out what causes his reactions for years now.

not totally sure what reminded me of this, but—if i had a nickel for every witcher fic describable as 'geralt and jaskier get plunged via magic into a mysterious hall without apparent entrance or exit, where every door opens onto some scenario from their own lives, either remembered or imagined, and by the end of the story they're holding hands…' admittedly i'd still only have ten cents, but it's kind of wild to me that there's more than one!

THE STORMS, ABERNACKYS AND TORRENT. a quick run-down of noah's family.. families

-> Gareth & Clara Abernacky : Noah's biological human parents. They've been happily married for 50 years and have made quite a life for themselves with the power of nepotism. Gareth inherited the family whiskey brewing company and through only minor misuse of his luck abilities, ensured the company has been running well and successfully since it came into his ownership. Clara herself comes from a well earning family of law-makers and politicians and before she retired she was a very successful criminal lawyer herself. Despite their busy professional lives, they doted on their children while they were growing up, treating them well but ensuring they all understood that they were lucky and should always do what they could to help less fortunate people. The disappearance of their second child during a family camping vacation almost tore a hole in the marriage however, as Clara refused to believe that something terrible had befallen her son, while Gary began to believe that he had died the more time passed. They were able to pull through and still very much love each other, but they both still disagree on what happened to Noah.

-> Nicolas Abernacky : The eldest son of Gary and Clara, Nick has done his best with the tools his parents gave him to lead a good life, but it seems his own bad-luck ability affects him too, or maybe he's just not the luckiest member of the family. From failed marriages, flunked jobs and a habit of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, it's no wonder why Nick is considered to be the ill-tempered, ill-fated black sheep of the family. However he is not a bad person, he took his parents teachings of respect and kindness to heart as a child and has held onto it since, trying to do what he can to help others around him.. Which may have lead to a brief stint working as a superhero, though this ultimately suffered at the hands of his inability to settle down into a career and an unwillingness to get himself killed for strangers. Nick was 7 years old when his little brother disappeared while they were on holiday and even though he's been told many times by many therapists and his parents that it isn't his fault, he still feels some responsibility, as he is supposed to protect his younger siblings, right?

-> Nadine Abernacky : The youngest of the Abernacky siblings and at the minute, the current heir to the family business ( nothing personal, Nick! ), it is something she does not desire and is in the process of convincing Nick to accept it over her. Nadine is set on making as much of her remaining life as her own as she can and is doing well in her work in being a surgeon as she found it was the best way to keep to the family promise of helping others without relying too much on the family wealth, even going so far as to pay her own way through medical schooling. She's a determined gal with unending amounts of patience for the right people, and very little for the wrong. Nadine was one year old when Noah went missing and as such does not remember him nor a time where bringing him up in conversation doesn't automatically make things awkward. Nadine is in the same boat as her father on whether or not her unknown older brother is even still alive.

-> Noah Abernacky II : Nick's goldfish.

-> Y'olara & L'efe of the Storm : Noah's adoptive alien parents from the planet Cryon! L'efe is a retired Guildsman of the Intergalactic Thieves Guild and currently lives happily in their frozen home with his wife. Out of the two, L'efe is actually the more quiet and reserved one whereas Y'olara is a lot louder and straight to the point type, all of their children seem to have inherited their mother's firey nature but also their father's ability to listen. Mostly. Despite the temper, Y'olara was a much loved teacher amoung the children of their settlement on the Isle of Shards, teaching them how to read and write, read and count, and also how to hunt and forage through the snow and ice for food. Her sons often spent time with her in and out of their schooling and would help her in her teaching duties, while L'efe went off to work in the Thieves Guild to bring home supplies to survive the unending winter.

-> Torrent of the Storms : The eldest son of Y'olara and L'efe who was probably the most excited member of the family when he learned that he was getting another brother, and that his new brother was an alien. Torrent had always been inseperable from his brothers and was often found with one or both of them, helping them in the harsh snows, playing or play-fighting with them. He truly was a big brother first and a person second and so it was surprising to nobody that Torrent chose to join the Thieves Guild alongside his adoptive younger brother to keep an eye on him. Upon joining the Guild, it quickly became apparent that where Torrent had taught and cared for Noah growing up, that Noah was going to have to teach and watch out for his older brother as.. Well Torrent wasn't exactly the smartest. He failed on written and theory tests often enough that he was almost sent home, but was able to pass on his final attempt ( although his handwriting on that paper looked very similar to his brother's ) Once they both were inducted into the Guild, Torrent predictably spent his whole, short-lived career at his younger brother's side with a few occasions where he went off on his own for short periods. Torrent's untimely death at the hands of some former colleagues, tore a rift in not only Noah's crew, but in the family too, as Noah grew distant from them out of guilt and Raz'nar, their younger brother, refused to accept that it was not Noah's fault.

-> Raz'nar of the Storms : The youngest of the Storm clan, Raz'nar had a very brief, passing interest in going to space with his older brothers but ultimately chose to remain at home with his friends and family. He lived a simple life helping around the settlement and assisting his mother in her teachings before L'efe retired from the Guild. For a time the three of them ensured that their friends, family and fellow Isle dwellers were cared for and safe in the harsh conditions of their planet, though L'efe thinks Raz'nar should've at least visited the stars just once to gain a better view and perspective on life and everything instead of having his sole focus be based on the Isle of Shards. Of the three siblings, Raz'nar has lead a normal life, helping manage the settlement, going out hunting and foraging for food and eventually finding his wife to start a family of his own with. The stag-do took place in space on a planet that was almost entirely one large night-club, arranged and paid for by his older brothers, Raz'nar will admit that he did have fun, but much preferred being on the ground in familiar territory. He has not talked to Noah since Torrent's passing, it has only been one sided shouting matches as the youngest of the trio wholeheartedly believes that somehow it was Noah's fault. If Noah had just stayed on Cryon, Torrent wouldn't have followed him and Torrent would not have died in someone else's fight.

-> Noah Torrent ( Abernacky I ) : The middle child of the Abernacky family and the adopted middle child of the Storm clan, his disappearance on a family camping trip caused a lot of confusion, fear and controversy in the area at the time and for a long time afterwards, campers to that particular ground rarely let their children out of sight fearing something terrible befall them. Of course, they are all completely unaware to the fact that Noah wasn't deliberately taken, somehow he managed to sneak into an alien ship and remain hidden long enough that turning back to return him was out of the question. As a result of this, from the age of four Noah was raised on the ice planet of Cryon with his adoptive family and developed a strong need to adventure back out into the stars to see what was out there, and also to finally escape the damned snow. Joining the Intergalactic Thieves Guild has lead him on all sorts of adventures, good and bad, he's met his closest friends and worst enemies while adventuring the stars, and even had a brief stint back on Earth that did nothing more than make him feel alien himself. Currently he's low contact with his adoptive family, and his biological family have no idea that he's even alive, though he's aware of them and is trying to work up the courage to finally meet them. Until then, he's kept company by Plex, his Guild assigned A.I assistant, and Shi'p, his sentient spaceship.

Gale Dekarios appears at first glance to be an attractive but disheveled wizard with a lot of charm but also a sorta sad, wet energy (like a cat left out in the rain). Then you get to know him, and he still is that, but he's also...

Gale Dekarios:

- Archmage.

- Chosen of the Goddess of Magic.

- Best friends with a tressym.

- Penpals with a magma mephit.

- Has been to at least one other dimension.

- Once bought 60 drinks at an adventurer's bar to stop a needless fight.

- Lives in a tower.

- Seems like a pacifist but says things like, "Let me recite their demise," in battle.

- Knows a guy who can get you some brains.

I'm sure there are more interesting tidbits I'm missing, but I can't keep making this list forever.

Furthermore, all of Gale's horny lines come from out of nowhere and hit you like a truck. The timing and delivery are incredible. Completely blunt, no warning, no reservation. Just, "Not that I don't appreciate your musk," and, "I once read a book that explained in some detail the effect a brush with danger has on one's desire for... other forms of stimulation," and, "It surely can't be a surprise that I have a practiced tongue."
